University of La Verne College of Law: Scholarship Golf Tournament

The Society of Legal Studies and Business from The University of La Verne is holding their 2nd annual charity golf tournament benefitting a scholarship fund for law students interested in business.

The tournament will be held on Friday March 12, 2010 at Industry Hills Golf Club in Azuza, Ca., one of the states most historic and noteworthy golf facilities. Law students and lawyers are envited to participate and encouraged to donate to this scholarship cause. The tournament will cost $175 per person and will include green fees, cart rental, range balls, lunch, and dinner.

Scholarship: Milbank Diversity Scholars Program

Each year Milbank selects law students who will receive a salaried summer associate position and a $50,000 scholarship. ($15,000 is distributed during each student’s third year of law school; payment of the additional $35,000 is contingent upon receipt and acceptance of a Milbank permanent offer, to be paid upon each student’s joining the Firm.)

The Milbank summer program is comprehensive and personal. Summer associates rotate through the Firm’s practice areas during a ten-week period. The program is managed by the Recruiting Committee, along with a team from each practice group, to ensure that each summer associate receives a broad and challenging experience. Numerous seminars and social events round out the experience of the summer associates.

Eligibility and Criteria
Factors considered in the selection of Milbank Diversity Scholars include academic achievement,
demonstrated leadership ability, excellent writing and interpersonal skills, and a sincere interest in
our practice. Students who are members of groups traditionally under-represented in large law firms are encouraged to apply. To be named a Milbank Diversity Scholar, candidates must be in good
standing at an ABA accredited law school and have successfully completed their first year of a
full-time JD program.

Asian Pacific American Bar Association (APABA) Summer Followship: $5,000

APABA has announced its 2009 Fellowship Award in the amount of $5,000. This is a great opportunity for a law student planning to take a position in a nonprofit organization or governmental organization and work substantially in a unit that serves the Asian Pacific American community in Los Angeles County for at least a 10 week period during the summer. Working for a public defender, district attorney, or a judge does not qualify.

To apply for and be eligible for the APABA Fellowship, potential applicants must be enrolled and in good standing at an ABA accredited law school during the 2008-2009 academic year. Applicants must secure a position with a non-profit organization of their choice in the greater Los Angeles area with an emphasis on assisting the Asian Pacific American community at the submission of their application.

Finalists may be interviewed by one or more members of the APABA Fellowship Committee (if determined to be necessary). The Fellowship award will be announced in April of 2009. Please send all inquiries to edmond.sung@gmail.com or derek.ishikawa@gmail.com.

Vietnamese American Bar Association Scholarship: $1K

The Vietnamese American Bar Association of Northern California is accepting applications for its 2009 scholarship program.

Requirements: 1) must be a law student, 2) must be committed to serving the Vietnamese American community, and 3) must have funding need for the upcoming school year.

Three recipients will receive $1,000 each. The submission deadline is June 30, 2009.

2009 Diversity Scholarship: California Bar Foundation

Since 1991, the Foundation has awarded more than $2 million through its scholarship programs. Launched for the first time in 2008, the Diversity Scholarship seeks to support newly admitted law students from groups historically underrepresented in the legal profession who have committed to attend a California law school. Candidates apply for the Scholarship at the beginning of the summer prior to commencing their law school studies. The Scholarship helps pay the costs of obtaining a law school education, including tuition, fees, books, and related education expenses. Awards of up to $7,500 recognize incoming first year law students with financial need who demonstrate a desire to make a positive impact as a community leader.

Shropshire 1L Book Scholarship: $300

The Shropshire Group Book Scholarship Awards is accepting applications for 2009 scholarships. Open to 1Ls, each selected scholar will receive a $300 scholarship to go toward 1L law school books.

The Shropshire Group, an educational foundation aimed at assisting minority applicants to law school, has provided nearly $85,000 in scholarships since 2005. Selected scholars will be presented their award at the 3rd Annual Shropshire Group Educational Leadership Awards Banquet on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the Luxe Hotel in Los Angeles, CA.

To apply for the scholarship, interested candidates can send an official resume and a 2-3 page personal statement to info@shropshiregroup.org. Scholarship selections will be notified by e-mail or phone and provided two complimentary tickets to the awards banquet.

Southern California Chinese Lawyers Association (SCCLA) Scholarship

The Southern California Chinese Lawyers Association ("SCCLA") annually awards seven to ten $1,000 Scholarships and three to four $2,000 Fellowships to local Asian/Pacific American law students.

The Scholarships are awarded based on need, academic accomplishments, and/or potential contribution to the Chinese-American community. Law students at all levels are encouraged to apply (including first, third year day, and fourth year evening).

The Fellowship award funds a clerkship at the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (“APALC”) during the upcoming Fall and Spring school year. Receipt of Fellowship funds is conditioned upon serving as a clerk at APALC for a minimum of 15 hours per week for 10 weeks. Please see the attached page for additional information on the Fellowship requirements and guidelines. There is no clerkship condition for any of the Scholarships.

Completed applications are due on Friday, March 6, 2009. Applications must be

California Supreme Court Historical Society: $2,500 Scholarship

The California Supreme Court Historical Society's 2009 Student Writing Competition awards a prize of $2,500 and publication in the Society’s journal, California Legal History. Second and third place winners may also be chosen, and all winning papers will be posted on the Society’s website, www.cschs.org.

TOPIC
Original, unpublished scholarly writing on any aspect of California legal history, ranging from the Supreme Court itself and its justices and decisions, to local events of legal historical importance—including biography, significant cases, independent state interpretation, the California Constitution, and reorganization of the court system, as well as areas of law such as criminal law, civil rights, family law, tort liability, environmental law, and taxation—in any time period from 1846 to the present.

International Trademark Association: Ladas Memorial Award 2009

The International Trademark Association announced the 2009 Ladas Memorial award. The writing competition is open to all students, practitioners, and academics interested in trademarks and trademark law. For eligibility in the student category, writers must be enrolled as full- or part-time law or graduate students. The submission deadline is Friday, January 16, 2009.
